What do GPFS members value about our flute community?

"GPFS is an amazing organization. I have found everyone involved to be totally welcoming and encouraging despite my not having any formal flute training. They offer numerous opportunities to attend or participate in a variety of activities (flute choir, sight reading sessions, First Tuesday presentations, guest artist concerts, and the annual Flute Fair to name a few) and seem genuinely happy to have a non-classical semi-professional musician among them. If you love the flute check this group out!!" (David G.)

“I am a member of the GPFS because I love being a part of such a vibrant community that has continued to inspire me pursue all knowledge about flute playing. It has provided me incredible opportunities to perform in masterclasses with Sarah Jackson, Jean Ferrandis, and Jasmine Choi and provided the space for me to tryout my forever flute for the first time. The GPFS has always been there for me as my career has grown and changed.” Sarah G.

"As someone who has loved playing the flute for more than 50 years, I am proud to be part of an organization that not only supports its members with a wealth of resources but also advocates for the broader impact of music and musical education in our community. " (Sue B.)

“GPFS is such a great and important resource in helping connect our flute-playing musical community - I’m so appreciative of the programs GPFS offers! I have gotten a lot out of performing in masterclasses, including a couple sponsored by GPFS during my graduate studies. It’s great to be part of a community of such wonderful, enthusiastic people who share your passion.” Alexis E.

“I became involved with GPFS because I was a student at PSU and my professor, Dr. Carlson, advertised a GPFS event. I then joined the GPFS for it. Moreover, I believe that flute societies are a beneficial tool for learning and connecting with the local/broad musical community.” Camila O.

“It has been a while since I’ve been a part of a flute community. I was so excited to find this group and am hoping to get to know more people. I’ve only been in Oregon for a couple of years and would love to connect with more flutists.” Cassie M.

“I have been a private flute teacher in the Eugene/Springfield area for almost 15 years. The annual Portland Flute Fair is an event that allows me to bring my students along, and for them to try new flutes, take classes, and hear some spectacular musicians - all packed into a single day.” Mindi C.

"The Greater Portland Flute Society is both vital and enjoyable. Vital because it serves aspiring flutists by providing a network of learning and support in their development, whether as students or as professionals building their career. The enjoyable part? Everyone is friendly, all levels of skill are welcome with professionals and recreational players alike interacting fully with each other, and, GPFS events and concerts are inspiring!" (Donna M.)

“I am a member because I wanted to stay connected with the wonderful flutists in the Portland area after I left to teach WSU. I spent 5 years in Portland and got to know so many wonderful people. I didn’t want to miss out on hearing about their projects.” Sophia T.
